On December 12, 2011 I drove around Troy, Illinois looking for Christmas lights to photograph for an assignment at the Edwardsville Intelligencer. On that trip I happened across the Paul Simon Park near the intersection of Edwardsville Road and W. Clay Street and captured this photo. Photos should appear in the Saturday, December 17th issue of the Edwardsville Intelligencer newspaper.

About a mile or so back behind a large abandoned farm in the back roads of North Dakota is a swamp. In this swamp is an almost apocalyptic scene of old abandoned cars from the 1950′s. Like a scene from a movie, these cars are all overgrown in North Dakota tall grass with their only visitors being me and the elements. “Overgrown” was photographed during my 6 year period exploring abandoned locations on the back roads of North Dakota. This particular photo was taken at one of the largest abandoned farms I found near my parents town of Lisbon, ND. The old cars were collected in a swamp some distance behind the old farm. Mark Polege is a reoccurring transplant from the upper Midwest to the St.Louis region who was introduced to photography during a stint at Clayton High school in the mid 1980’s. Though mostly self taught, photography has been a part of his life during the years of traveling & moving around the U.S. It really launched to a whole new level after a move to rural North Dakota.
Black & white photography has been a passion of mine since the very first time I picked up a 35mm Pentax K1000 I borrowed from my high school. Since then I continue to explore, experiment, & strive to learn all I can about photography and expanding my own perception of the world around us.
